Policy Analysis and Socio-Economic Research
The programme was conceived in 1999 after it was realized that due to lack of information, civil society organizations and the public face a challenge to effectively engage in policy processes at local, national, regional and international levels. UDN so thought that it was important to undertake research prior to engagement with policy makers in the Policy formulation processes. The programme was hence created to address such gaps. The major objective of the programme is to strengthen the capacity of UDN and Civil Society in general to effectively engage in policy policies at local, national, regional and international levels.
The programme works to ensure that the Minister of Finance, Planning and Economic Development formulates and implements participatory and pro-poor strategies to reduce the number of people living below the poverty line.
The programme achieves this through advocacy and lobbying to ensure that:
- The formulation and implementation of the NDP is fully participatory and incorporates the concerns of the poor and marginalized people
- Contracting and utilization of loans and grants is done in a open and transparent pocess
- Empowered CSOs influencing AID, fiscal and International Economic Initiatives for poverty reduction
Through the programme, UDN carries out on a regular basis the analysis of the policies that are formulated for poverty reduction. The analysis and findings from research are also used to make an input into policy design and planning at various levels. This has made UDN a key stakeholder in the arena of policy design, planning and formulation. The programme provides critical inputs in policy formulation on various issues such as debt sustainability; strengthening the role of Civil Society Organizations in influencing policy planning and formulation in the country.
