The Governance and Rights Program aims at mobilizing and strengthening civil society efforts to combat corruption, abuse of office and wastage of public resources and to improve governance and human rights in the country. In this respect, UDN works with Government institutions such as the Directorate of Ethics and Integrity, Inspector General of Government, the Auditor General and CSOs to promote good governance and accountability.
UDN is the lead organisation in the anti-corruption campaign in Uganda. Because of our participation in the campaign, the network has established itself as the advocate for open, accountable and transparent government. UDN has implemented a grassroots anti-corruption campaign to mobilise people at the grassroots to participate actively in holding public officials at local and central government accountable. Through this project, people at the grassroots have identified themselves with the campaign and already lead in the activities at various local levels to organise themselves and demand accountability.
The program also enagages with a youth taskforce, which is instrumental in organizing different activities among the youth such as debates, art piece, drama and essay competitions. This has enabled the children to participate actively in the fight against corruption and increased awareness on causes, effects and how corruption can be prevented in Uganda.
The program has four Result Areas
1. Participation of citizens in the implementation of the National Anti-corruption Strategy at national and local levels strengthened.
2. A CSO system to reward public officers who uphold integrity and ethical performance established and operational.
3. The capacity of citizens in the seven districts to claim their rights and hold public officers accountable strengthened.
4. The effects of grand and political corruption on society reviewed, analyzed and understood.
